Lady Grinning Soul

Lady Grinning Soul................she's one of my more elaborate projects. Silk/merino mix, novelty yarn, silk cocoons, silk carrier rods, pearls and a very fine open weaved silk scarf. I enjoy working with "open" weaved silk material- mostly because I love the anticipation of what the final effect will be like. After nuno felting, fulling and shrinkage the wool pulls on the silk giving it that cob web effect...........It's really very hard to believe that this paper thin, cob web, inkling of a material has suffered through the very "violent" process of rolling with soapy water for an hour and 20 minutes, being rubbed against bubble wrap for another ten and then whacked around in a bathtub under hot scalding water 20-30 times!!!

I peeled the silk carrier rods, rolled and inserted them into the silk cocoons and sewed them up with little pearls on the ends to keep them in place. Up close they look like flower buds. Lately, I have become more courageous with the word "sewing".........and it seems much easier to thread a needle and actually do it!!! Of course, at the expense of suffering several puncture wounds and bleeding out all over the place.......
